TechFlame reports that Citibank analyst Jin-Wook Kim said that South Korea's commitment to invest 350 billion US dollars in the US may put pressure on the won. As a result of the 1997-1998 financial crisis, South Korea is unlikely to use 416 billion US dollars of foreign exchange reserves, so public institutions may need to raise 20 billion to 30 billion US dollars in foreign currency every year. Financing the remaining $86 billion to $96 billion may require reliance on the bond market. Large-scale bond issuance may drive up financing costs and put pressure on the won. Even if private companies share part of the financing burden, a decline in the proportion of US dollar export revenue converted to Korean won due to investment in the US may also present a risk of depreciation. Citi anticipates that South Korea will require the US to provide solutions to potential foreign exchange shocks and seek to extend investment commitments. (gold 10)
