TechFlame reports that Bridgewater Fund founder RayDalio published an article today discussing stablecoins and cryptocurrencies. Its core ideas include:
1. It is not believed that deregulation of cryptocurrencies will threaten the status of the US dollar as a reserve currency, but the poor debt situation of the US dollar and other reserve currency governments affects their appeal as reserve currencies and means of storing wealth. This has always been one of the factors driving the rise in gold and cryptocurrency prices.
2. The exposure of stablecoins to treasury bonds is not considered a systemic risk. The real risk is the decline in the actual purchasing power of treasury bonds. If stablecoins are well regulated, this should not create any systemic risk.
3. Cryptocurrency is now an alternative currency with a limited supply, so all things being equal, if the supply of dollar money increases and/or demand for it falls, this could make cryptocurrency an attractive alternative.
