TechFlame reports that Cøbra, the long-term maintainer of Bitcoin's official website Bitcoin.org, said that Knotts may replace Core and become the reference software for Bitcoin network nodes. Earlier this year, most senior BitcoCore developers decided to make major changes to OP_RETURN (a Bitcoin scripting tool widely used to store arbitrary data on the blockchain) in October 2025.
If the node upgrades the software from the current Bitcoin Core version 29 to version 30, the new default settings in the Core software will accept and forward large amounts of data unrelated to on-chain Bitcoin (BTC) transfers. According to Core developers, increasing OP_RETURN's data carrier limit can modernize the memory pool's data storage role and be consistent with the Bitcoin ledger's consensus rules.
According to Knots (a forked and dissenting version of the Core software), nodes should filter out most arbitrary data by default to prevent this behavior from taking up Bitcoin's precious block space.
