Gold10 Data, August 14, Ethan Harris, the former chief economist at Bank of America Securities, said that the days when the Federal Reserve kept pace are long gone. Waller and Bauman, who were appointed by President Trump in July, have “broken the harmony” by supporting interest rate cuts. This means that no matter what decision the Federal Reserve makes, there will be opposition.
Harris also said, “I expect a heated debate between hawks and doves before the September meeting, causing some uncertainty over the decision to cut interest rates. Hawks don't give in easily. But I think this month's data will support a 25 basis point cut in interest rates.”
Stephen Ricciuto, chief economist at Mizuho Securities, said that currently there is no majority of hawks who support keeping interest rates unchanged or dovish supporters of easing policies. Most Federal Reserve officials are in the middle. The debate within the Federal Reserve focuses on whether it makes sense to cut interest rates to support a weak labor market. (gold 10)
