According to Hong Kong Commercial Daily, Hong Kong police reported a total of 12,505 online shopping fraud cases in 2025, an 8.2% increase year-on-year. Among these, the single largest loss case involved cryptocurrency trading. A victim joined a Telegram cryptocurrency trading group and was tricked by a fake Bittwatt (BWT) customer service representative into providing a verification code, leading to the hijacking of their Telegram account. As a result, all assets in the connected cryptocurrency wallet were transferred out, resulting in a loss of over HK$3.7 million. Police reminded users to contact customer service through official channels when engaging in cryptocurrency transactions, never disclose verification codes to others, carefully verify transaction information before making payments, and use the "Scameter" to assess fraud risks.
